[Updated] MIUI 13 release date: Here's when you can expect Xiaomi to unveil the update

On Android, only a few OEMs have gone all out to use near-stock Android on their devices. These are Google with their own Pixel-line of devices, and Nokia with their devices that run Android One, Motorola to some extent and that’s it!

Every other Android phone maker from Xiaomi to Oppo, Realme to Samsung, even OnePlus, all insist on using their own custom Android skins on their devices.

Some OEMs like Xiaomi have gone a step further to effectively decouple their MIUI skin from Android versions, rolling these out independent of each other.

This means that MIUI users get more excited over MIUI updates and not Android versions. Their update cycle is also altered from the usual September-October (when we usually expect a new version of Android to drop) to MIUI’s own update cycle.

In the past few years, here’s how we’ve seen Xiaomi release its MIUI updates.

– MIUI 6 – August 2014
– MIUI 7 – August 2015
– MIUI 8 – June 2016
– MIUI 9 – August 2017
– MIUI 10 – June 2018
– MIUI 11 – October 2019
– MIUI 12 – April 2020

From 2014, we’ve seen Xiaomi stick to a roughly annual update cycle for MIUI. However, things went a little sideways with MIUI 11, which took a record 16 months to get rolled out.

Xiaomi then bounced back, delivering MIUI 12 only 6 months after its predecessor, MIUI 11. Analysts attribute this pace to the fact that the corresponding Android version at the time of MIUI 11 and MIUI 12, Android 10, was the most quickly adopted version of Android.

Of course, we’ve seen Android 11 drop and all indications are that it will get adopted much faster than we saw Android 10. Which brings us to the all-important question. When are we likely to get a MIUI 13 build?

We’ve received confirmation that this upcoming skin is already in the works so it’s nice to know that the wheels are already turning.

Going by these facts, and seeing as how Xiaomi and many other OEMs have stepped up their software update game, it is safe to assume that we should see MIUI 13 either late this year or within Q1 of 2021.

Should Xiaomi decide to pull yet another 6-month cycle, we should see a release later this year. If it decides to go back to the annual cycle, we should see a release withing the first quarter of next year. Either way, the user wins.

This could be in line with recent reports that Xiaomi is in its last leg of rolling out MIUI 12 to eligible devices with the last devices set to get updated by end of October.

Of course, this is speculative at this point but stay tuned to our MIUI 13 tracker as we shall update it with any new info as we get it.

Responding to a user’s query regarding the availability of MIUI 13, a Mi forum moderator said that “We will find out more about it later next year.” Thus, it seems we will have to wait a while before we get any official news on the skin.
