New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on September 28, 2020) follows:
Asus must be the first and only smartphone vendor that has had devices testing the beta version of a major Android OS update for close to a year.
Yep, that’s right! Only three or so more months and it will be a year since Asus rolled out Android 10 beta update to the ZenFone Max Pro M2 and its predecessor, the ZenFone Max Pro M1.
The two were at least expected to bag the stable update to Android 10 sometime this month, but nope! This became apparent when the duo bagged a new set of updates, both on Android Pie and Android 10 beta.
Folks on Android Pie got a new security patch alongside a bunch of bug fixes, security improvements and performance optimizations across board.
On the other hand, folks who have been testing Android 10 for months got updated to beta 3 on the ZenFone Max Pro M2 and beta 4 on the Max Pro M1.
While the latter’s update reportedly addressed annoying sound issues (poor audio quality during calls and when listening to music, including no bass), the former’s update reportedly introduced these same issues.
I just checked two MPM1, one in A9 V087 and one in A10 V432, and their speaker volume are approximately the same, so as bass performance. Furthermore, I had tested two MPM1, one in A10 V429 and one in A10 V432, before V432 rolled out, the earphones performance is solved in V432.
For the uninitiated, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 has had audio issues since switching to Android 10 beta. And it seems the same issues are now affecting Max Pro M2 units after the latest Android 10 beta 3 update.
I have updated my Max pro M2 to 17.2018.2007.428.
Bugs:
– Low volume through speaker and earpiece while calling. (speaker compared to Pie)
– Low volume through speaker while playing music.
– No bass through earphones. (tried max pro m1 bug fix method, it improved sound quality. still bass is very low compared to pie build).
– Mobile network icon is missing.
– Huge chin (Navbar) with A10 gestures.

Matter of fact, some device owners have had to deal with audio issues since the early versions of Android 10 beta, which means it isn’t new at all.
On the brighter side, a ZenTalk forum moderator has come out to shed some light on the matter following several complaints by affected Max Pro M2 owners.
Thank you all for your asking. I have forwarded the information of MPM2 sound issue to the relevant department. We will keep you updated and your consideration will be very much appreciated.
But looking at the development pace of the ZenFone Max Pro M2 Android 10 update, it could as well take another long wait before fixes for these audio issues arrive.
Of course, we will keep an eye on this and other related developments and let you know whenever we have news. To stay in the loop, check out this bug tracker regularly.
Furthermore, you can also keep an eye on our Asus Android 10 update tracker to get notified when these two bag the stable version. For those keen on Android 11, we also have a detailed tracker here.
Update 1 (November 21)
11:25 am (IST): In an unfortunate turn of events, it seems that Asus will not be making any adjustments to the audio quality on the ZenFone Max Pro M2 with Android 10. Head here to know all the details.
