[Poll results] Opinion: Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 & ZenFone Max Pro M1 Android 10 update - Maybe it's time to move on

In a couple of weeks’ time, the ZenFone Max Pro M2 and ZenFone Max Pro M1 Android 10 beta update will be four months shy of a year old. That’s insane, especially when you realize that timely updates is supposed to be one of the USPs of the devices.

With stock Android, Asus says the ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Max Pro M2 should be able to receive software updates on time. But going by what Android 10 update hopefuls have been through, this is only good on paper.

As noted, the end of September will mark 8 months since Android 10 beta update arrived on the ZenFone Max Pro M2 and Max Pro M1 handsets.

Just as we thought maybe Asus is ready to push the stable update, device owners started receiving Pie-based September security patches.

Essentially, this means the wait for the stable Android 10 update is still on. For how longer this wait goes on no one knows, probably not even Asus. And that’s the bitter pill to swallow, guys.

So, what then? Where does this leave device owners, more so those who have had to deal with multiple bugs during the painfully long beta testing period?

Every love affair has an end. While there is no doubt Asus has some of the best hardware on smartphones, more so the budget-to-midrange segment where the ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Max Pro M2 hail from, software support is still wanting.

After months of beta testing and still no fixes for existing bugs, there is no guarantee that the stable update to Android 10 will be worth the wait for owners of the duo.

We won’t be surprised if the eventual rollout still brings unwanted guests, which then leads to another concern. In the event that major bugs are part of the stable rollout, how long will Asus take to address them?

By all means, all signs point to what is set to be a bumpy ride for those who intend to hang on to their ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Max Pro M2 handsets. Perhaps time is ripe for owners of the two devices to step out of the Asus camp to avoid a repeat of this experience.

Matter of fact, since it’s not just Max Pro M1 and Max Pro M2 users that are affected (ZenFone 5, ZenFone Max M1/M2, and ZenFone Live L1/L2 are also stuck on Android 10 beta builds for months), maybe it’s time to try a different smartphone brand altogether, especially if you care about timely software updates.

So far, Samsung has proven that it is the best in the world by adding another year of Android OS updates to its flagship and midrange devices. If affordability is what drove you to the Max Pro M2, well, the Galaxy A51, for instance, is set to receive 3 OS updates.
