[Updated] Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S MIUI 12 update might fix video app & late/missing app notifications bugs

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S was unveiled back in April 2020 and is a solid mid-range device. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor paired with 4-6GB RAM and a decently sized 5020mAh cell.

The device launched with Android 10 with Xiaomi’s own MIUI 11 on top of it. Many months later and despite being in line for an update to MIUI 12, the eagerly-awaited build remains elusive.

Even with its current MIUI 11 build, the Redmi Note 9S is not without issues. A section of users has reported a few annoying issues with their devices. One of the reported bugs has to do with the device’s built-in Mi Video app. According to users, the app frequently crashes, making any viewing experience very frustrating.

The basic troubleshooting procedure, including clearing app data and force-stopping the app yield little in relief to affected users.

In response to this user-complaint, a Super Moderator on the Mi Community Forum confirms that this issue has been submitted to the development team. He goes on to confirm that the bug is set to get fixed in an upcoming update, most probably MIUI 12 for Redmi Note 9S.

Another issue that’s been reported by users of the Redmi Note 9S has to do with the way the device receives notifications. Some users have reported missing notifications as they don’t hit their devices on time.

The notifications only come in once the device is unlocked. This, despite having properly set the power saving settings to allow notifications to come through.

The forum moderator confirms that this is also a known issue and that a fix will be coming in the next update. In the meantime, the moderator offers a quick-fix solution to this issue, and here’s an excerpt of the same.

1) download and install USB driver

2) download and install Minimal ADB

3) enable developer mode

4) go to the folder where ADB is installed, hold down the Shift key, right-click on the keyboard and choose “Open a command window here”
5) execute this command in shell: adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable

While the moderators in these posts did not expressly confirm that these fixes will come with Redmi Note 9S MIUI 12, it is the only long-overdue update that this device is in line for. However, you still might want to take this with a grain of salt. You might also want to keep an eye on our dedicated MIUI 12 tracker for when the update drops.

The latest MIUI 12 beta 20.11.3 update brings a fix for the ‘notification management’ according to the changelog. It’s possible that the notification issue on the Redmi Note 9S may have been addressed with it. Although, it’s unclear when the fix will be available via a stable update.
