Widevine L1 Certification allows users of certified devices to stream HD video content on DRM platforms like Amazon Videos and Netflix. Without this, users are stuck with watching low-resolution content on the said platforms, if at all.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S, sold in some markets as the Redmi Note 9 Pro was released earlier this year with Android 10-based MIUI 11 out of the box.
The device has received a number of updates through its life and somewhere along the way, the device bagged an update that broke Widevine L1 certification, meaning that users could no longer access HD content on the said streaming platforms.
We then got reports that this issue would be fixed with an update to MIUI 12. However, MIUI 12 has since proved elusive for this device and as such, users have been stuck with sub-par video resolution since.
In our initial coverage of this issue, it was apparent that the solution to this issue was unlikely to come to the devices while they still ran MIUI 11. This, because Xiaomi was already working on MIUI 12 for the Redmi Note 9S and it wouldn’t make much sense.
Well, much to the surprise of everyone, it seems as though Xiaomi has fixed the issue in a recent update that brought with it the August 2020 security patch. This patch, still based on MIUI 11.
Widevine L1 certification is fixed in 11.0.11.0 update.
Have you turned on Sync? If not, turn on automatic sync from quick toggles. Then go to Settings » Passwords & Security » Fingerprint » Fingerprint payments » Download the latest Widevine L1 certification. Do a reboot and check with the DRM checker app.
Report back your findings.
In response to a user query, seeking to find out the state of Widevine L1 certification on the Redmi Note 9S, a Mi Community Forum moderator proceeds to confirm that the issue has since been fixed and offers a way to enable and verify it on the device.
And indeed, the Redmi Note 9S has regained Widevine L1 certification, much to the delight of users who desperately need this feature enabled on their devices.
However, many Redmi Note 9S users are more concerned that their devices, despite being in line for an update to MIUI 12, are yet to bag this highly anticipated update. For more details on what we know so far on MIUI 12 for Redmi Note 9S, check out our coverage of the same.
