Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Android 10 update likely won't support 4K DCI video recording

It has now been several months since the first Android 10 beta arrived for the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1. But Asus is yet to release the stable update for the device. Considering that the device comes with a Stock Android experience, it’s unclear what’s causing the long wait.

Most recently, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 picked up the July security patch. However, there are still no signs of the much-awaited stable Android 10 update. Matter of fact, users can experience Android 10 on the device via a ZenUI port too.

Nevertheless, the Android 10 update, while exciting, may leave out some features that are present in Android Pie. Previously, it had appeared that the Android 10 update may drop Vodafone VoLTE support on the device. But that was quickly confirmed to be false.

The ZenFone Max Pro M1 may also miss out on getting ARCore support with the Android 10 update. Further, it appears that the device will also not support slow-mo video recording. And on the subject of video recording, it appears another interesting feature is going to be removed.

At present, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 on Android Pie supports DCI 4K video recording with a resolution of 4096×2160. This is the same true 4K resolution at which professional video cameras shoot in. However, due to the low processing power, the frame rate drops down to 24Hz.

The standard 4K UHD recording option found on many phones, including flagships, has a resolution of 3840×2160. Thus, when recording in DCI 4K resolution, the image will appear to be a bit cropped in when compared to a standard 4K UHD recording as explained by GSMArena.

Nonetheless, after installing the Android 10 beta update, a user noticed that the DCI 4K video recording option is no longer available. Thus, the individual took to the company’s ZenTalk community forum to seek some clarification on the matter. And unfortunately, the response isn’t good.

ZB601KL Android 10’s video recording supports up to 4K UHD. If you wish record 4K DCI videos, you may choose to downgrade to Android 9.

According to the mod’s comment, users may have to roll back to Android 9 Pie to record 4K DCI videos. What’s unclear is whether this feature is only missing in the beta versions or will it be removed from the official Android 10 update as well.

Therefore, there is still some hope for the feature to be made available with the stable Android 10 update. But since it has been removed from the beta version, things don’t look too bright.
