New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on July 30, 2020) follows:
The development of Android 11 is in its advanced stages and if all goes according to plan, we should see the next stable build of Android released sometime in August or September, at least according to history of previous launches.
Already, we have seen companies working on their own skinned versions of Android 11. For instance, OnePlus is already working on OxygenOS 11 Beta and pushing these updates to eligible devices.
Not to be left behind, Samsung is also working on its next skin on top of Android 11, One UI 3.0. While earlier reports indicated that the Samsung Galaxy S20 series of devices would get updated to One UI 2.5 first, there’s a new school of thought that begs to differ.
The Galaxy S10 family of devices launched with Samsung’s own One UI 1.1 out of the box. The devices were never updated to One UI 1.5 when launched with the Galaxy Note 10 but instead, borrowed a few features from One UI 1.5 and got One UI 2.0 as its next big update.
Some suggest that the same might happen with the Samsung Galaxy 20 family of devices. See, Galaxy S20 launched with One UI 2.1 out of the box. The company’s upcoming Galaxy Note 20 is expected to run One UI 2.5 out of the box. According to these reports, Galaxy S20 might skip One UI 2.5 altogether and get updated to Android 11-based One UI 3.0.
However, notable Samsung leakers suggest that One UI 2.5 will indeed hit the Samsung Galaxy S20 devices sometime after the launch of the Note 20 devices.
Even as that happens, today we are seeing reports that suggest that One UI 3.0 based on Android 11 is already being tested on the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. In images shared by a user on Weibo, a string of code bearing the model number SM-G988B says that Samsung is testing Android 11 on the same.
It remains unclear how reliable this claim is but if indeed Samsung is already working on One UI 3.0 for this device, S20 users have something interesting to look forward to. We only hope that this update doesn’t take too long to hit the said devices.
We have an updated list of Samsung devices that are eligible for an update to One UI 3.0 and Android 11. You can check it out here. For a list of devices that should possibly receive updates to One UI 2.5, check out our coverage on the same here.
