Android 11 adds 9 updatable OS components focused on privacy, security, & developer consistency, still no scrolling screenshot

The Android 11 beta testing is in full swing. There are a bunch of new features and improvements that have been added including enhanced privacy and security options.

One of Google’s main goals with Android lately has been to improve the way Android updates work. We saw this with the introduction of the Android One program and even Project Treble.

However, both of these initiatives from Google have not made a significant difference. Albeit, the adoption of Android 10 has been faster than any previous version of Android according to Google.

We’re still seeing several OEMs struggling to release the Android 10 update to all eligible devices. However, Google is taking a few new steps to ensure the updates arrive faster. In a new blog post on the Android Developers blog, the company has provided more insights into the matter.

In the ‘Updatability in Android 11’ section of the blog, the company has stated that 9 new updatable OS components have been added. These components can be updated via the Google Play Store on devices running Android 11.

Here are the 9 updatable OS components that have been added.

Tethering, NNAPI, Cell Broadcast Receiver, adbd, Internet Key Exchange, Media Provider, statsd, WiFi, and SDK extension.

This takes the total number of updatable components via the Play Store to 21. It’s clear that Google wants to streamline Android updates further which is undoubtedly a welcomed move. The major themes in the ‘updatability’ section are OEM Developer Previews, Google Play system update, Generic Kernel Image, and Virtual A/B.

But with all the new additional features being added, a highly-requested one has been left out. That being the option to take scrolling screenshots. Most OEMs have already provided the scrolling screenshot option via their custom skin over Android.
