[Update: Likely Android 10] Asus ZenFone 5 June update with fix for Widevine L1 & NFC SIM payment issue rolling out

Asus has now started rolling out a new security update for the Asus ZenFone 5 smartphone. The update is meant for ZenFone 5 handsets running on Android 9 Pie.

The update brings bug fixes for NFC SIM card issue, Widevine without L1 issue along with the June 2020 security patchset. It carries version number 17.0615.2005.25.

Interestingly, Asus ZenFone 5 users running Android 10 beta have received a new update yesterday, with same version number as the current update which is currently live for Android 9 Pie users.

However, the update for Android 10 beta users, although carried the same version number, had a different changelog altogether. Below is the changelog for your reference:

1. Updated Android security patch
2. Changed system to vanilla Android 10
3. Supported Google Play System update
4. Changed to SnapDragon Camera, Google Contacts, Google Clock, OEM FM Radio
5. Supported Android 10 Dark Theme
6. Added “Suggested actions and replies “in notifications’ advanced setting
7. UI design changed to Android 10
8. Changed to Android 10 Wi-Fi QR code sharing / scanning feature
9. Changed to Android 10 notch design
10. Added Adaptive brightness, Adaptive Batter, Digital Wellbeing in Settings
11. Fixed the issue where microphone is not working while ‘OK Google’ is active.
12. Fixed OIS-functionality in Camera not working as expected
13. Corrected translations for certain parts in the Camera settings
14. Fixed the issue where the screen could unintentionally turns on
15. Fixed payment by NFC SIM card not working issue
16. Fixed widevine without L1 issue
17. Ajusted notification vibration effect

Asus ZenFone 5 underwent Android 10 beta testing in early April 2020, but as of yet, users are still waiting for the stable Android 10 update to hit their devices.

Coming back to the latest update received by users running Asus ZenFone 5 on Android 9, it is being pushed via OTA in batches and will take some time in reaching all the units.

If you have not yet received the notification then you can head over to Settings>Software updates> Check for updates to manually check for the update.

Considering the version number of the June update, it’s likely Android Q-based. Reason being, the build of the Pie-based updates pushed to the device until last month initiated with 16, while the currently out update bears build 17.0615.2005.25.

And there is a precedent (see here and here) when the major version number of the build changes, the Android OS version gets upgraded as well.

What’s confusing is that the changelog posted on the ZenTalk announcement section doesn’t convey whether the update (17.0615.2005.25) is an Android 10-based one. And if it’s Android 10-based, the device’s bios and firmware page with the same version number displays an Android 10 beta update. So another confusion here is whether the update is Android 10 stable or beta?
