The Big Question: Will Motorola Moto G8 Plus Android 11 (Android R) update release?

Motorola has diversified its smartphone portfolio in the recent past to include a series of Moto One phones, some based on Google’s Android One program and others simply riding on the name.

The Lenovo-owned company has also revived the Razr series with its first foldable smartphone and is expected to unveil a revised version too. Despite all these, the Moto G series remains the company’s most popular family of phones across the planet.

Unfortunately, not even this sheer popularity has been enough to convince Motorola to change its position on the software support policy regarding the Moto G series. The company only guarantees a single OS upgrade and security updates after 60 to 90 days.

Seasoned Moto G device owners will know that the Moto G4 Plus got lucky with its second OS update to Android Oreo, but ever since, no Moto G device has received two OS upgrades.

Will the Moto G8 Plus get lucky as well and get two OS upgrades, including the Motorola Android 11 update? For now, it’s anyone’s guess.

What’s even more interesting is that some of the Moto G8 Plus’ counterparts will receive Android 11 as their first and only OS update. On the other hand, an official Moto G8 Plus Android 11 update would be the second OS upgrade.

Unlike the Moto G8 and Moto G8 Power that have Android 10 out of the box (hence guaranteed updates to Android 11), the Moto G8 Plus has Android Pie pre-installed. Matter of fact, the device hasn’t even received its Android 10 update, at least as of this writing.

The Plus variant has always been the premium model in any Moto G series, which usually means it gets more attention. It remains to be seen whether this aspect will force Motorola to provide Android R update for Moto G8 Plus owners.

Others in the Moto G8 family that might never see Android 11 are the Moto G8 Power Lite and Moto G8 Play. The two also have Pie out of the box and should be upgraded to Android 10 as the only guaranteed OS upgrade.
