Original story (published on May 25) follows:
Part of the joy of owning a smartphone is the updates that it gets periodically through its lifetime. The promise that your device will, at some point, get updated to a new build of Android and get a bunch of new features is exciting.
But that only works when the device actually gets updated to the said new version of Android, and on time. Otherwise, this only leads to a bunch of frustrated users and angry messages between these users and customer support.
The Motorola G8 Plus was first unveiled back in October 2019, just a month after Android 10 was made official. This device sports the Snapdragon 665 chipset, coupled with 4GB of RAM and complementing mid-range specs so it is an ‘Okay’ phone.
Despite being launched after Android 10 was official, this device still ran on Android 9 Pie, an OS that the device still runs to date. We already seeing initial builds of Android 11 so it is understandable why Moto G8 users are getting fussy that their device has not been updated to Android 10.
Most recently, we saw this device get an update to the April 2020 Android security patch update, one that it still runs to date, on top of Android 9 Pie.
According to reports, Motorola G8 Plus users might be a little out of luck as Android 10 for their device is still a while away. According to the company, the Moto G8 Plus is still expected to receive the Android 10 updates. However, that is still pending for partner approval.
It remains unclear what exactly this means and the company rep appeared non-committal when asked about when exactly the Android 10 update for this device is likely to hit devices, or the accompanying timelines.
This might not sit well with users of the Motorola G8 Plus who have been eagerly awaiting an Android 10 build since they got their devices. We shall continue to follow the story and update as, and when we get more details.
Motorola has been hard at work, building and rolling out Android 10 to many of its devices. At the time of writing, the Motorola devices that had already been updated to Android 10 include;
