May 15, the Trump administration banned US companies from doing any trading with Huawei after it accused the Chinese giant of espionage and IP (intellectual property) theft. Following which, most US based companies including Qualcomm refused to do business with Huawei.
Then during the G20 Summit at Osaka, US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jingping came to agreement regarding the trade between the two countries. The agreement allows American companies to sell products to Huawei after President Trump’s recognition that doing business with Huawei is no longer an issue of national security.
Huawei, being the world’s second largest phone manufacturer and not being able to do business with it, the US companies were apparently not happy about it. The US companies were required a special trade license as Huawei was blacklisted from doing trade in US.
In July, the US Department of Commerce announced, it would start issuing special license to the US companies keen on doing business with Huawei. But are only allowed to ship widely available products.
Reportedly, in August Huawei recieved a 90 days extension of its temporary trade license. If unofficial reports are to be believed, 130 US companies filed for special trade license the same month.
There is no offical word as of now, if or not Qualcomm has acquired the special trade licence with Huawei. But, Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf said that Qualcomm has resumed business with Huawei but hasn’t made clear about what components are being sold.
Nevertheless it is a relief for Huawei the Chinese giant, as it can still use Android OS in its smartphones though deprived of Google apps and services. Transformation from Android to a new OS independent of Android, won’t be easy for the users as well as Huawei to cope with.
