NOTE: For all latest, breaking news related to Tumblr adult content ban as well as its alternatives, head here.
The Tumblr adult content ban resulted in a very large number of users being booted out of the platform. While the move has been widely criticized by media and users alike, it undoubtedly created a business opportunity for a lot of players (both existing and new).
We at PiunikaWeb have been maintaining a continuously updated list of Tumblr alternatives. And today, we are happy to announce that a new name is being added to the list. The platform we’re talking about is newTumbl, which was born after the Tumblr’s announcement of NSFW content ban.
Let’s discuss about this new platform in detail.
newTumbl
As with many other new Tumblr alternatives, development on newTumbl started after Tumblr announced it’s banning almost all kind of adult content on its platform. Team newTumbl says they started working on this new platform on December 9, and had the first set of features ready by December 30.
Without explicitly naming Tumblr, the newTumbl team says the platform was created with an aim to offer a home to refugees of other social media sites.
Recently millions of users were booted from other sites and are now looking for a welcoming new home. If that’s you, you’re in the right place
We offer asylum to all those who feel persecuted simply for wanting to exercise your freedom of speech
It is our mission to provide a new, safe home for outcast bloggers and consumers who have been abandoned by the very web sites they have helped to cultivate, grow, and thrive
The platform – which looks and feels a lot like Tumblr – is still under construction, but many features have been implemented. The US based company recently shared a progress update. Take a look (click/tap to view full size):
The newTumbl Terms of Service says the platform can only be used by those who are 13 years or older (for those in EU, age restriction is 16 though). As for the kind of content newTumbl doesn’t allow, here’s what their FAQ page says:
Can I post NSFW/Adult content? Yes. So long as you are over the age of consent and the content you post is not expressly prohibited by law. Illegal content includes things such as child pornography, bestiality and zoophilic pornography, speech that encourages hate or violence, and materials related to terrorism. Such content is not tolerated on newTumbl
Keep your Tumblr username, content import in works
newTumbl is trying to one up its competitors by promising Tumblr users that they can retain their username or blog name. There’s a caveat though: you need to “adequately prove” that you are the owner.
If you are migrating from other popular social media sites, you may be granted the use of a username even if someone has already registered that name, provided that you can adequately prove that you were the owner of that username. Specifically, users migrating from Tumblr.com will be allowed to retain their Tumblr username provided you create your newTumbl account and verify your Tumblr.com username on or before May 31, 2019
This feature may attract a lot of Tumblr refugees, especially those whose blogs were popular on Tumblr. The newTumbl team, however, doesn’t make it clear what will happen to the first owner of the user/blog name in case that name is claimed by someone else.
Moving on, if you are wondering about whether or not newTumbl allows you to import content from other sites, their FAQ page says they may offer that functionality.
We’re working on that. We want to be able to have all the blogging capabilities done first, especially the ability to queue posts, which should be done by the end of January. We hope to be able to import blog data shortly thereafter
It’s also worth mentioning here that newTumbl will only allow one blog per account in the beginning, but they will offer the ability to create multiple blogs “eventually.”
