Update: OnePlus has finally announced the availability of OnePlus 6 Android Pie Open Beta program. Should you install it? This article might help you.
Original story follows:
The OnePlus 6 has started getting a new update. It’s for beta users in China, arriving as Hydrogen OS Beta 3 build (OP6_H2_BETA_3). There are not a lot of changes in the new update – it just contains a couple of major fixes.
To begin with, the update fixes an app display issue with the recent apps menu. Then there’s another fix which is for an issue related to accidental opening of Hidden Space apps in the App drawer.
Sadly, the change log doesn’t provide any more details about these issue. However, if you take a look at recent complaints on the official OnePlus forum (here and here), you’ll see a lot of complaints about Hidden Space apps getting shown in the Recent Apps list.
In fact, a OnePlus Bug Hunter team member last week confirmed that this is by design, and said the requested change has been forwarded to the development team as a new feature request. So, it’s highly likely the company has implemented this change in the new Beta 3 update.
Aside from these major fixes, the update also includes some general bug fixes and improvements.
So Hydrogen OS getting frequent Android 9 Pie Beta updates is good news for Chinese users. But what about users of OxygenOS-powered OnePlus 6? When will Android Pie beta be made available to them? Well, the Chinese company has offered an update on this as well.
In the latest Weekly Updates posted by the company, they revealed the build is pending approval by Google CTS. Here’s what exactly they said:
Progress update on Android Pie: the software team is still working to get it approved by Google CTS
So it looks like the company has done its part for the release of Android P-based OxygenOS beta update and is now waiting for Google to give a thumbs up for it. If everything goes well, it’s reasonable to assume that the beta update will be made available worldwide pretty soon.
