Chinese smartphone company OnePlus has confirmed a major development. In response to a query from a OnePlus 6 user, the company confirmed the ‘oil painting’ camera issue will be fixed in the next update. The confirmation was provided over email, a snapshot of which was shared by the user on OnePlus forums.
This is a big news, given that cameras on OnePlus devices have had this issue since at least OnePlus 5. Back in April, the company promised to fix the oil painting problem, but didn’t provide any time line.
However, earlier this month, the OxygenOS Open Beta 12/10 for the OnePlus 5/OnePlus 5T brought along optimizations to reduce “oil painting effect,” confirming that the issue with cameras on these devices will fixed in the next stable update.
And now, even OnePlus 6 users can breathe a sigh of relief that the ‘oil painting’ camera issue with their units will also be fixed in the next update.
Presumably, the update being referred to here is the OxygenOS 5.1.10 update, which is expected soon as the HydrogenOS 5.1.10 update (aimed at Chinese OnePlus 6 units) has already started rolling out.
Oil painting effect
In case you aren’t aware, the problem rears its ugly head when you try capturing a photo in low light or when the camera is zoomed in. Here’s an example image showcasing the issue (click/tap to enlarge):
Theory floating around is that in these situations, the image processing focuses more on reducing noise in the image than getting a sharper picture. Whatever the case, what’s good is the problem should be fixed soon. Rest assured, as we’ll let you know as and when that happens. Until then, keep watching this space.
