Update (May 15):

The company has confirmed another issue wherein the Oculus Rooms feature is broken in the Go headset. Rooms are failing to load friends and parties in the VR, despite the app in phone clearly showing the friends. Instead, the following error pops up:

Oculus-Go-load-friends-error

The confirmation came from someone from Oculus staff saying:

Yes. That is the issue we’re investigating. Please hang tight for a solution. Thanks.

Original story:

The standalone Oculus Go VR headset finally went on sale last week, and reviews/opinions from early adopters are out. While the headset is receiving praise on various fronts (including for the convenience the ‘standalone’ factor brings along), a lot of issues have been reported as well.

We’ve collected some major ones, and will start with those that have been officially confirmed.

Can’t access Go as disk drive from computer/PC

Of course, you would want to transfer your existing media files to the headset to view them in the VR environment. However sadly, users are reporting they can’t access the Go as a disk drive when connected to their PC.

Fortunately, Oculus has acknowledged this as a known problem. Here’s what a company employee said on the official Oculus forums:

We’re aware of this issue, due to having developer drivers installed for Go

They have also provided a workaround to get this working. Head here for the steps you need to follow.

Pixelated/blurry display

There have also been a number of reports related to blurry or pixelated display. Complainants say regardless of the quality of video being viewed, the blurriness is quite prominent.

For its part, Oculus doesn’t consider this as an issue. Rather the company says that’s how it is, so you can think of it as a known limitation. Here’s what an Oculus employee said on the company’s forums:

As I mentioned above, the lenses in the headset enlarge the screen, so pixels can become more visible. This is expected, though Oculus Go is actually an improvement to something like Oculus Rift in this regard

Other Potential Issues

1. Among other potential issues that we came across, the most prominent one is related to users reporting about permanent yellow marks/strains in the display of the headset. While Oculus staff says this could happen if the display is exposed to sun light, at-least one user confirmed they noticed the problem in indoor environment after installing a game.

The discussion is currently going on.

2. Another serious issue that’s being reported by some users is the headset causing discomfort in eyes. Officially, Oculus has so far only replied this:

You might be seeing glare. This is normal for Fresnel lenses, but actually improved from Oculus Rift.

3. One more problem that several users are reporting is ‘headset drift’. Some say the drift is small, others complain of worst/severe drift. Even the Oculus employee also experienced it on their headset. Here’s what they have to say:

In my experience so far with Go, the drift seems pretty low. However, as with any 3dof system, it can happen. While some small amount of drift may be normal, if it seems to happen in an excessive amount, you should contact us.

4. The rest of the reports range from users observing bad vertical streaks running across their display, to headset shutting down even though it’s charged, to accessibility issues on phones.

Good News – MAC address to be displayed

Non availability of MAC address prior to connecting the headset to a WiFi network has been a concern for several users, who say in order to provide WiFi access to the device, they need its MAC address. But that’s not possible currently.

Good news is the company has confirmed it is working on ways to display MAC address.

Thanks for sharing. We’re looking at ways to display the MAC address in the future.

Sadly, Oculus didn’t provide an exact time-frame for this.
