From day one we have been breaking our neck trying to highlight the exasperating call drop/mute troubles on Samsung Galaxy S9 – an issue that’s troubling users globally. And finally, we have a good news for those affected: reports are pouring in that Samsung has started rolling out an update to fix the problem.

Update particulars

We know those affected have already waited for long, so getting straight to the point, it’s being reported on the company’s official European help forum (and other Spanish forum) that a new update (G965FXXU1ARD4) has been pushed out by the company, but only for the unlocked variants of Galaxy S9+ in the European region.

Apparently, the update is region-specific within Europe also, for its version and size details are different – build number G965FXXU1ARD4/G965FOVF1ARD1/G965FXXU1ARD7 (sized 167.23 MB) and G965FXXU1ARD4/G955FOXM1ARCA/G965FXXU1ARD6 (sized 146.22 MB) are the ones carrying the fix. But the What’s new section of both read the same, which is:

  • Call stability has been improved
  • The quality of Wallpaper have been improved

What’s contending is that Galaxy S9+ users from Spain, Italy and Ireland who have received the aforementioned update on their units have confirmed that the call silencing problem has been resolved for them (as can be seen in following selection of user comments).

Santiago from Spain. Have suffered the problem with the calls since day 1 and up till today.
Have updated with the last patch 2 hours ago. Have tested with 6 longer than 5 minutes calls. No cuts. It seems they truly fixed the problem this time. Finally.

I had a software update today (Ireland/ Vodafone). I made few phone calls during the day and until now no problems with silent, dropping calls.

First day with the new firmware ARD4: 49 min calls with no drops or silence, often amazing audio quality. (S9+ from Italy)

What about others?

As far as S9+ (unlocked) users in other European and non-European regions are concerned, it’s reasonable to assume there will be a small delay as Samsung would want to first see the feedback from users in the markets where the update has been made available.

Here are a couple of things that a user from UK recently got to hear from Samsung on the matter:

Just spoke to Samsung and they said the fix has been sent out to all Network providers and they will send it out to me.

Talked to Samsung. They’ve told me that “Off the record” the fix will be in the UK a week today. Seems like a very long time.

Fix for the UK next Thursday so I’ve been told. Another week *****

As for S9 (both carrier locked and unlocked) and S9+ (carrier branded) users troubled with the call drop/mute issues, sadly there is paucity of information. But logically speaking, Samsung should be rolling out a fix for them as well. The sooner the better.

Don’t worry. We have been investing all our resources as far as this issue is concerned, and will continue to do so (keeping you in loop, of course) in the near future as well, until the matter is laid to rest.
