[Updated] Good news: You can now access Android Auto wirelessly

Hi Android Auto Community –

We’re excited to announce that wireless support is now officially available! Using Android Auto Wireless, you can start Android Auto on your car display without taking the phone out of your pocket or bag. Your device will automatically connect to the head unit using WiFi without having to manually connect a USB cable.

The first head units supporting this feature are already available from JVC and Kenwood, and we expect more products to roll out throughout the year.

Please note that wireless is currently supported on Pixel, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6P devices in North America. Additional device support will be coming in the future. You can find more information by visiting our help center here.

There were reports last month that Android Auto will soon get wireless support. In fact, Kenwood has already started shipping Android Auto Wireless decks. And now, Google has confirmed that they have enabled the feature from their end.

A Google employee Lawrence – who is also a member of the company’s Android Auto team – revealed this on a forum thread earlier today. Here’s what they said:

Hi everyone, as some of you have discovered, wireless was just enabled earlier this week for Pixel and Nexus devices.

Yes, the feature was enabled just a few days ago, may be 1-2 days back, if you go by user reports (see the Reddit thread below).

Here’s what all you need to access this functionality:

• A car or aftermarket receiver that is compatible with Android Auto Wireless.

A Pixel or Nexus phone with Android 8.0 (“Oreo”) or higher as follows:

• Pixel or Pixel XL
• Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL
• Nexus 5X or 6P
• The Android Auto app version 3.1 and up.
• A high-quality USB cable for initial setup.

As for other devices, Lawrence said the company is working to add the support. Here’s what they exactly said:

For non-Google devices, we are actively working with phone manufacturers on adding software compatibility and hope to share more updates soon.
