Update (May 24) : This issue is now hitting headlines. See coverage here.

Original story:

And here comes to light another derailed functionality post update. After receiving Gboard’s March update, Android users have been complaining (1,2,3,4,5) about spell check broken, as the red line under the misspelled words is not showing up anymore.

For more clarity, the aforementioned issue has nothing to do with the auto-correct feature. Rather, it’s only the spell check which is out of order, as the Google keyboard is not flagging the wrong spellings anymore.

Take a look at how some of the complainants word the issue:

After a recent update, the red underline stopped working altogether—even after attempting to reassign spelling correction to gboard. The oddest thing is that when I assign Default Keyboard to SwiftKey **and assign spelling correction to Gboard (not native Samsung or SwiftKey) ** the red underline works for *some* apps.

I noticed that my phone no longer places the red line under misspelled words, and I can’t get it to start working again.

Similar reports can be seen in the review section of the app’s Play Store listing. Here are some of the recent ones:

Even the experts (who are a part of Google’s Top Contributor program) on the company’s official help forum have confirmed the same behaviour, and hence have been asking those affected to send feedback, so that they could escalate the issue further.

That said in March, nothing seems to have improved till date. Neither came an acknowledgement nor a fix, and the number of complaints continue to rise till date. We hope Google considers the case and fixes whatever’s causing the glitch for users to enjoy the basic spell check feature without any hassles.
