Update (May 17):
At least one user who is currently on Android P beta and running Android Messages app’s latest version 3.2.039 (APKMirror) recently confirmed that the MMS glitch has been resolved for them.
For what it’s worth, since the upgrade to both P preview and Messages 3.2.039…..I’ve not gotten the error. I just sent 11 MMS messages to my Pixel 2 XL from my work phone (iPhone) and had 100% success.
Update (April 18):
One of the Google employees updated on the matter this morning that a fix should be rolling out in days to come.
We are working on a fix to the issue, which we should have in the coming days. For users that are impacted, this issue affects the messaging database, which in turn impacts the ability to reliably receive Group MMS messages. We’ll post another update once a fix is available.
Update (April 11):
Google starts reinvestigating Pixel 2 MMS/group message issue.
Original story:
If you remember, at the beginning of this month, we highlighted a Pixel issue, wherein Pixel 2 and 2 XL device holders complained of problems with MMS/group messages, irrespective of the carrier they operated on. While Google jumped into action and started investigating the matter as soon as the number of reports started swelling, what’s now coming to light is the company has fixed whatever was causing the entire issue.
A Google employee (on behalf of the Pixel team) broke the good news to the troubled users recently on the company’s official help forum, saying
Thanks everyone for reporting this issue. It should now be resolved. Please let us know if you continue to encounter the problem.
But there is a twist. Despite Google officially calling the matter resolved, none of the complainants look satisfied, including those using the latest Messages app version (3.0.039). In fact, some are also complaining of MMSs not even downloading. Take a look at how frustrated some users sound:
I am STILL unable to receive MMS messages. I am on AT&T. I CONTINUE to receive all MMS messages (pictures, gifs, etc.) separately that were meant to be sent in a group….and when they do come separately they show up as infinitely spinning icons that never download (see my attached images). I also still receive random unknown sender messages (see my attached images). The issue is NOT RESOLVED for me. Please don’t pass this off as being fixed. Inform us of the problem you found, how you went about trying to fix it, and what you’re GOING TO DO NOW that the problem is obviously not fixed!
This junk isn’t fixed lol. Anyone saying it’s fixed has lost it lol. Anyone getting “All” their mms is getting lucky. We have All had a good day and thought hell yeah it’s fixed. No sir tomorrow it will be trash again.
I have tested with Pixel 2 XL (current build) with Cricket (ATT MVNO) with the new messages and Google Support Services. Still can not send MMS messages with the 2 APNs from the SIM card present
Literally just got a “mms not downloaded” this is still bs
And… I just got on a thread, after I ask a friend to send two images…Two spinning circles, message not downloaded, “527 b” things that will never complete. These are coming from an iphone user.
According to the customer service rep that I just spoke to, this issue has NOT been resolved yet.
Still a bit early to conclude who is correct (users or Google). We’ll keep a tab on the forum thread and see if complaints grow. Meanwhile, let us know in the comments section below if you’re still facing MMS problems on your Pixel 2.
