Update (March 17):

Motorola has released an update to fix the glitch, as confirmed by an MotoAgent. Check if the update in question resolves the issue for you.

An update has been released to fix this issue. Please let us know how it goes.

Original story:

Monthly security updates and their tendency to break existing features. Sigh! Coming to light is another update triggered bug (massive one), this time on Motorola’s late 2016 release Moto M devices.

Motorola/Lenovo forum is currently drenched with complaints from Moto M users who received the recently pushed 66MB update, which broke a feature as basic as calling. Going by user reports, neither normal calling nor VoLTE is working on their units after the update, while mobile data/LTE is intact.

While that’s a huge problem, what’s good is Motorola has confirmed the issue at their end. Not only that, they have also stopped the roll out of the buggy update, and are working to fix the same. The confirmation came from a Motorola Admin on the company’s official help forum, saying

We have received confirmation from the software team that they are making good progress on delivering a fix. This a top priority, and we will communicate more information as it becomes available.

Furthermore, they added

In the meantime, we have stopped rolling out the update, and have instructed our service network to return phones back to the previous software on request, as some of you have already determined.

Following is the concerned Admin’s complete statement:

It’s worth mentioning that the problem seems to be limited to Moto M units on Jio’s network apparently.

For those of you who wish to know more about the issue, we have prepared a selection of some user comments and tweets which clearly explain the problem in question:

You are right. Jio voice calls have stopped working. Only data is working.

After installing the update, on the home screen for Jio – 4G with phone symbol icon is missing. Only LTE symbol is showing. Voice calls on Jio are not working. Only data working.

Yesterday I got an update of 66MB after that I’m unable to make outgoing calls as well as incoming calls by using VOLTE service.

Yes, I too have the same problem after “xt1663_S373_180208_Row” update yesterday. No volte is available.

As already mentioned above, Motorola’s software team is working on fixing whatever’s causing the entire mess, and we hope they do it sooner than later. We are keeping a close watch on all related developments and will update our story as and when the fix gets live. So keep a tab on this space.
