Update (January 24): Truecaller reached out to us to officially inform that both these issues have now been fixed. Here’s what they exactly said:

We would like to inform you that – this is part of V8.72 roll-out which is already at 5% roll out now. We should hit 100% by end of this week. The update will include bug fixes for both.

Also, if you take a look at the app’s Play Store listing now, the ‘what’s new’ section clearly states that the problems have been resolved.

Original story follows:

Of late, the Truecaller app has caught our sight, for two broken functionalities. Firstly, it’s somehow causing the Chrome browser app to randomly crash, and secondly, the recently released Backup feature is already out of order.

What’s relieving is that both the problems have been officially acknowledged, and fixes for the same will be coming soon. Let’s take up the matters one by one:

Issue 1: ‘Chrome has stopped’ error

For more than a week now, help forums are drenching with complains about an error stating Chrome has stopped every time on accessing the Truecaller app or on receiving a call from an unknown number.

The aforementioned Truecaller-triggered Chrome glitch is not specific to any particular device or manufacturer, as it’s being widely put across by OnePlus, Xiaomi and Pixel users.

Not only the help forums, complaints are pouring in on Twitter as well:

As the number of reports escalated, the Truecaller team quickly swung into action. They not only acknowledged the issue, but also updated that a fix for the same will be rolled out this week. Here’s what one of the representatives said while replying to a complainant on the app’s Google Play page (review section).

We’ve solved the issue where Chrome is crashing, but will not be in effect until next release (next week) unfortunately

As it stands, the fix isn’t live yet.

Issue 2: Backup feature broken

Adding to the list of broken functionalities, the recently released Backup feature is also broken. One of the users highlighted the problem in the review section of the app’s Google Play page.

Soon after being reported, the company accepted the issue, and revealed that they are working to fix it.

We have identified the issue and are fixing it now

Meanwhile, they have also suggested a temporary workaround (as can be seen in the following image):

While the crash issue will be fixed soon, there’s no known time line as to how long will it take to fix the ‘Backup’ feature. We hope they do it sooner than later. Meanwhile, we are keeping an eye on all related developments, and will update as and when they occur.
