Here's a list of major features and bug fixes included in Android 8.1 Oreo

Google recently officially announced Android Oreo version 8.1. Aside from introducing support for Oreo (Go edition), which is basically a new software experience for entry-level devices, there are several other major features as well as bug fixes that the update brings along. So, lets take a look at them.

This morning, Google took to the official Pixel User Community to break the details of Android 8.1 release (which will be made available to all eligible devices in the weeks to come). Following are some of the major highlights:

New additions

1. New Wi-Fi speed labels (which will show only under public/open networks) have been added, which are as follows:
• Slow (0 – 1 Mbps): can make phone calls and send texts
• OK (1 Mbps – 5 Mbps): can read webpages, use social media, and stream music
• Fast (5 Mbps – 20 Mbps): can stream most videos
• Very Fast (20 Mbps+): can stream very high-quality videos

2. Open network notifications: no need to jump to Settings to connect to an open network, as now you can connect directly from notifications (which show up when Wi-Fi is enabled). You can:
• Tap Connect to connect to the network
• Tap All Networks to change Wi-Fi settings
• Disable reception of notifications for a particular network by clearing the notification

3. Enhanced copy/paste functionality with ‘smart text selection‘, as Oreo now recognizes texts – like addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, URLs and more – on long press, highlights the relevant word(s), and then recommends a next logical step via a suggested app.

Major bug fixes

The following widely-reported problems have been fixed:

• Bluetooth connectivity glitches reported with Android Auto
• Poor audio quality for recorded videos on Pixel 2 devices
• Touch screen dead spots reported near the edges of Pixel 2 XL’s screen
• Random reboots/power offs with cellular data/Wi-Fi in picture

As far as the company promises, looks like Android 8.1 has a lot to do, and we hope what’s said gets accomplished too.
