UPDATE: The all new Backup & Sync app might fix the prolonged issue of Google Drive not properly syncing pictures from Google Photos.
ORIGINAL STORY BELOW
Google Drive automatically syncs images backed up on Google Photos, so that Photos users can view their stuff from within Drive as well. But lately, the functionality appears broken.
Not everyone seems to be affected, but those who are, report that Drive is not properly syncing pictures from Photos, despite all enabled settings. Users note that sync is either delayed and only a few pictures appear, or no pictures appear in Drive at all.
This issue was first reported in February, 2016. On September 11, 2016, an expert on Drive’s official forum said:
“This is something that we have been trying to bring to Google’s attention as it’s been reported many times”.
Another expert added on October 6, 2016 that
“We’ve escalated the issue”.
After a long period of silence, on May 19, 2017, the expert further disclosed that
“Using Google Drive is the only automatic way but there are reports of photos not showing in Drive occasionally”.
There were no updates after that.
It is clear that despite being aware of the bug, Google neither officially acknowledged nor rolled out a fix. A quick look at the relevant threads on the official Photos forum reveals that the number of reported use-cases about- Google Drive not properly syncing pictures from Google Photos- have only increased with time.
